Mississippi John Hurt (1893-1966) is seen here playing guitar for his wife and grandson in his home in Avalon, Mississippi. Hurt worked as a sharecropper for nearly all his life, though the Blues Revival generated significant interest in his music toward the end of his life. He had a large and close family, whom he left only briefly in 1963 when he relocated to Washington D. C. to record for the Library of Congress.
